Our first critical test with our new client was at 8:00 PM on a Saturday night January 2002. Asyst Technologies makes equipment that automates computer chip manufacturing. A high temperature alert went out from their Fremont, California plant. The five-ton Liebert air conditioning system went down jeopardizing a critical computer system. Responding to this emergency was our job. A few days earlier we had signed a service agreement with Asyst, launching a relationship that now includes mechanical design and construction, process piping and clean room air quality.

Facilities Vice President, Steve Carlson, and Sr. Maintenance Technician, Ed McLean had a lot at stake. Ed had recommended Marina even though we were newcomers and the smallest company bidding for the mechanical service contract. Steve backed Ed's recommendation.

 “We called Marina and were really surprised,” Ed said afterward. “The technician called in five minutes. He had the system up again in less than an hour.”

 Ed has 14 years experience as a mechanical technician. He knows his company's mechanical systems like the back of his hand, and he enjoys the collaborative relationship that has developed with Marina’s technicians. “Our backgrounds match up well,” Ed explains enthusiastically. “The technicians investigate a problem. I often know what caused it. Together we solve it quickly. Marina does not act like a vendor. They are part of our team.”

 As an executive Steve sees the financial value in a successful collaboration. “This is what a manufacturer with large complex equipment needs most in a working relationship. Because they make recommendations jointly, Ed and Marina are very clear about the value of a project. I rely heavily on them.” Additionally, Steve appreciates our flexibility. “For almost a year Marina has successfully addressed a variety of special project requests, such as installing filtered drinking fountains, vacuum and DI water piping, designing ventilation for our UPS room, and responding promptly to down A/C units on hot summer days.”

 Our working relationships combined with knowledge of their plant make it natural and easy to provide IAQ, mechanical engineering and construction services to Asyst. Ed saw value in our integrated approach. He says, “Marina’s Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) consulting was the deciding factor in selecting Marina as our supplier.” He was right. His payoff came early on when we designed and installed an enhancement to their clean dry air piping system. This was quick and easy because we have IAQ capabilities on board.
